Library plans to welcome Russian scholar

Russian scholar Artiom Soloveychik will present a free program of stories and anecdotes about life in Russia at 7 p.m. Jan. 27 at the Miller Branch of the County Library.

Soloveychik, a professor at Moscow State University, will teach audiences about life in his native country through folk tales, stories and question-and-answer sessions.

Man charged in purse snatching

An Annapolis man has been arrested and charged with snatching a purse, which contained $15, from a 75-year-old woman in her driveway in Ellicott City last month, Howard County police said.

Robert Julius White Jr., 33, of the first block of Bens Drive has been charged with robbery, theft and battery, police said.

He was arrested after the victim was able to give police a partial tag number of the dark-colored getaway truck, police said.

* Elkridge: 6700 block of Old Waterloo Road: Someone broke the rear side window to a 1989 Ford Probe between 10:30 p.m. Jan. 13 and 6 a.m. Jan. 14, and stole a $180 amplifier, a $280 subwoofer, a $100 amplifier and two tweeters valued at $40.

6800 block of Old Waterloo Road: Someone entered a 1980 Chevrolet Camaro between 11 p.m. Jan. 13 and 4:45 a.m. Jan. 14, and stole a $200 Alpine AM-FM cassette stereo, two Alpine 3-inch speakers valued at $30, $100 worth of cassettes and a $20 tape box.
