Monplaisir wins women's foil title

Three-time Olympian Sharon Monplaisir of New York won the women's foil title yesterday, as the United States Fencing Association's North American Circuit #2 ended at the Towson Center.

Monplaisir defeated Olga Chernyak of San Francisco, 5-3, 5-2, for the gold medal after a 5-6, 6-4, 5-3 victory over Jennifer Yu of East Palo Alto, Calif., in the semifinals.

Ann Marsh of Royal Oak, Mich., beat Yu, 6-5, 5-1, for the bronze.

Chernyak advanced to the gold-medal bout with a 5-1, 6-4 win over Marsh.

Felicia Zimmermann, Rush, N.Y., 3-5, 6-5, 5-1; Ann Marsh, Royal Oak, Mich. def., Suzanne Paxton, East Lansing, Mich., 5-2, 5-2; Sharon Monplaisir, New York, def. Quarterfinals: Monplaisir def. Yu, 5-6, 6-4, 5-3; Chernyak def. Marsh, 5-1, 6-4.

Bronze-medal bout: Marsh def. Yu, 6-5, 5-1.

Gold-medal bout: Monplaisir def. Chernyak, 5-3, 5-2.
