DURHAM, N.C. -- The Maryland women tried to make the most of a gimme at Duke yesterday, and senior center Jessie Hicks took a bloodied nose to prove it.

But before leaving the game with five minutes to play, Hicks scored a game-high 23 points to lead the third-ranked Terrapins to an 82-51 Atlantic Coast Conference victory at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

"I though we played pretty well," said Maryland coach Chris Weller. "The last couple of games we've tried to pick it up defensively. I was particularly pleased with the play of Katrina Colleton and Michele Andrew. They gave us good leadership on defense."

Colleton scored 15 points and had four steals. Andrew added 14 points in 37 minutes. Andrew and Hicks led the Terps (11-2, 3-1) with eight rebounds apiece.

Hicks moved among Maryland's top 10 career scoring leaders, passing Lisa Brown for the 10th spot with 1,302 points. She also moved passed Debbie Stewart into eighth place on the career rebounding list with 585.

Hicks' nose was bloodied by an accidental elbow from Duke's Zeki Blanding with Maryland leading 71-41 and 5:06 to play.

Maryland's one-on-one defense limited Duke (8-5, 0-4) to 34 percent field-goal shooting. During the first half, when Maryland built a 23-point lead, the Blue Devils failed to even get off a field-goal attempt for six straight possessions over four minutes. Maryland forced 27 turnovers, one shy of Duke's season high.

Maryland shot 50 percent from the field in both halves, but committed 21 turnovers. Their biggest lead came on Andrew's free throw that made it 80-47 with 1:35 to play.

Duke lost for the fifth time in the past six games.
