A Good pizza is hot, cheesy, with clean flavors and crisp crust. Connor's Classic Pizza meets all these requirements. Moreover, the pizza maker, Mary Alice Connor, looks authentic.

At the end of a busy dough-making day, she will often be covered with flour. That's a good sign. Pizza eaters want to see their cook dappled with flour because it means the dough is fresh.

In addition to whipping out a basic kid-pleasing 16-inch pepperoni pizza for about $10, Connor's, which recently

changed its name, has added a line of whole-wheat crust pizzas, including a vegetarian model.

The whole-wheat pizza with shrimp and garlic, $7 for an 8-inch diameter pie, has flavors that stand up and say hello. With a whole-wheat crust that is close to perfect, it is pizza for grown-ups.

There is also a selection of overstuffed sandwiches for $4 to $5 with the grilled Italian sausage, swimming with sweet peppers, onions and cheese, leading the list.

Tucked in the shopping center at Madison and Guilford and decorated with family photos, Connor's has no seats. But its location right next to the Jones Falls Expressway (southbound take Guilford Avenue exit, northbound get off at Chase, turn left to southbound Guilford) makes carrying supper home in the car very tempting.
