Atlanta Braves -- Agreed to terms with OF Ron Gant on a $3.7 million, one-year contract.

Orioles -- Acquired OF Harold Baines from the Oakland Athletics for P Bobby Chouinard and P Allen Plaster and agreed to terms with Baines on a one-year contract.

Boston Red Sox -- Announced that Jim Pankovits will return as manager of Double-A New Britain.

California Angels -- Named Billy Sample No. 2 radio announcer.

Chicago Cubs -- Invited former Orioles P Jose Bautista, P Bill Brennan, P Blaise Ilsley, P Dave Smith, P Mike York, C Orlando Mercado, IF Kent Anderson, OF Scott Wade and OF Eduardo Zambrano to spring training as non-roster players.

Milwaukee Brewers -- Agreed to terms with IF Billy Spiers, P Marshall Boze and P Rafael Novoa on one-year contracts. Invited C Bobby Hughes, C Mike Matheny, former Orioles OF Larry Sheets, IF William Suero and P Matt Maysey to spring training as non-roster players. Texas Rangers -- Named Toby Harrah roving batting instructor for Triple-A Oklahoma City and Double-A Tulsa and Tom House special assistant to the GM.

Basketball

Minnesota Timberwolves -- Activated G Gundars Vetra from the injured list. Placed G Lance Blanks on the injured list.

New Jersey Nets -- Promoted Willis Reed, senior VP in charge of bTC basketball and GM, to executive VP in charge of basketball and GM and extended his contract for three years, through the 1997 season.

Colleges

Lone Star Conference -- Readmitted West Texas State, effective Sept. 1.

Hofstra -- Suspended Demetrius Dudley and Joe LoRusso, men's basketball players, from Thursday night's game against Army for team rules violations.

Navy -- Named Yanusz Smolenski men's and women's fencing coach and Leith Askins assistant women's fencing coach.

Rhode Island -- Named Floyd Keith head football coach.
