Howard High's boys basketball team beat five-time defending county champion Oakland Mills yesterday for the first time since 1988.

The 55-48 victory ended Oakland Mills' streak of eight straight wins against Howard, and kept the Lions unbeaten in league competition at 2-0. Howard's overall record is 5-5.

"This was the biggest win for Howard in a long time," Lions first-year coach Kevin Broadus said. "In Howard County basketball, everyone wants to beat the Mill."

Led by Javier Michaux (18 points, 15 rebounds) and Dwight Case (13 points, 11 rebounds), Howard attacked visiting Oakland Mills (3-6 overall, 1-1 league) aggressively on the boards. Howard had 28 defensive rebounds and 15 offensive rebounds.

"They played tougher on the boards than we did and that was the main difference," Oakland Mills coach Dave Appleby said. "We got our shots but couldn't hit them."

Oakland Mills shot 19-for-58 from the floor, and Howard shot 25-for-61.

"Howard was quicker to the ball and seemed to want it more than we did," Appleby said.

Oakland Mills led 14-10 after one quarter, as the Scorpions shot 7-for-16 against Howard's matchup zone defense. Scorpions offensive star Michael Hill, who scored 39 in Oakland Mills' league-opening win over Wilde Lake, scored six points in that quarter.

But after Howard switched to a box-and-one defense against Hill, the outstanding sophomore was held to two points the rest of the game. And Oakland Mills shot 12-for-42 in the last three quarters.

"Clint Totten did a real good job against Hill," Broadus said.

Howard outscored Oakland Mills 13-8 in the second period to lead 23-22 at halftime. The Lions forced Oakland Mills into four second-quarter turnovers.

Michaux's buzzer-beating layup off a nice assist from Mike Brown (eight points, four steals, three assists) made it 37-32 after three quarters.

Howard's biggest lead was 49-38 with 4:08 left to play. The Lions made five of their first six shots in the fourth quarter.

Oakland Mills' press created a couple of quick turnovers and Rick Alvarado (12 points) hit a key three-point shot as the Scorpions rallied to within 49-45 with 2:55 left.

But Michaux scored off a rebound and Jeremy Milam made a free throw for a 52-45 lead. A rebound basket by Case and a free throw by Brown clinched it. Alvarado made a three-pointer at the buzzer for the final 55-48 score.
