Commissioner's Office -- Announced the resignation of Steve Greenberg, deputy commissioner and chief operating officer, effective in 90 days.

Boston Red Sox -- Named Mark Meleski manager of Single-A Lynchburg. Agreed to terms with C John Marzano on a one-year contract for $350,000.

Cincinnati Reds -- Agreed to terms with 3B Chris Sabo (.244, 12 HRs, 43 RBI) on a $3.1 million contract and with P Rob Dibble (2-5, 3.07 ERA, 25 saves) on a $2.5 million contracts. Sold the contract of 2B Bill Doran to the Milwaukee Brewers.

Los Angeles Dodgers -- Agreed to a minor-league contract with P Lee Guetterman (1-1 with a 9.53 ERA for the New York Yankees and 3-4 with a 5.82 ERA for the New York Mets) and invited him to spring training.

Milwaukee Brewers -- Designated 1B Franklin Stubbs for assignment.

Minnesota Twins -- Named former IF Al Newman an advance scout.

St. Louis Cardinals -- Agreed to terms with P Les Lancaster (3-4, 6.33 ERA for the Detroit Tigers) on a one-year contract for $350,000. Sent SS Bien Figueroa outright to Triple-A Louisville.

San Francisco Giants -- Signed OF-IB Todd Benzinger (.239 with 4 HRs and 39 RBI for the Los Angeles Dodgers) to a one-year contract. Signed OF Mark Carreon (.232 with 10 HRs, 41 RBI for the Detroit Tigers) to a minor-league contract and invited him to spring training.

Texas Rangers -- Agreed to terms with OF Gary Redus (.256, 3 HRs, 12 RBI) on a $1 million, two-year contract and former Orioles P Craig Lefferts on a one-year contract.

Toronto Blue Jays -- Signed OF Stu Pederson to a Triple-A contract.


Dallas Mavericks -- Fired coach Richie Adubato. Named Garfield Heard interim coach.

Phoenix Suns -- Activated C Tim Kempton from the injured list.


NCAA -- Placed Mississippi College on probation for four years. The football team will be ineligible for NCAA championship events in 1993 and 1994 and will not be allowed to appear on live television during the 1993 season. Banned off-campus recruiting and expense-paid on-campus visits for recruits during the 1993-94 academic year, and limited for 1994-95.

Brown -- Named Jim Fleming defensive coordinator.

Colgate -- Named Mike Whalen, Mike Gibson, Mike Kelleher and Joe Trainer assistant football coaches.

Colorado State -- Named Dave Lay offensive coordinator and Steve Fairchild quarterback coach. Announced that Urban Meyer will be retained as wide receivers coach.

Dickinson -- Named Darwin Breaux football coach.

Oregon -- Extended the contract of football coach Rich Brooks for two years through the 1997 season.

Southern Cal -- Named Don Lindsey assistant head football coach and offensive coordinator.

Virginia Tech -- Named Rickey Bustle offensive coordinator; J. B. Grimes offensive line coach; Rod Sharpless outside defensive line coach; and Bryan Stinespring tight ends coach. Released defensive coordinator Mike Clark and secondary coach Keith Jones.

Washington State -- Reached agreement with football coach Mike Price on a four-year contract.


Green Bay Packers -- Signed S LeRoy Butler to a two-year contract extension.

Kansas City Chiefs -- Named former University of Pittsburgh coach Paul Hackett offensive coordinator and quarterback coach.


New Jersey Devils -- Acquired C Bernie Nicholls from the Edmonton Oilers for C Kevin Todd and LW Zdeno Ciger.

Winnipeg Jets -- Sent G Sean Gauthier to AHL Moncton.
