School board elects Scott as 1993 president

The Board of Education elected Carolyn L. Scott as president and John D. Myers as vice president for 1993 at its meeting yesterday.

Mrs. Scott was not at the meeting because she was just released from the hospital and is recovering from an illness.

Mr. Myers presided over the meeting yesterday. He served as school board president in 1991.

Both he and Mrs. Scott's terms on the school board will expire in December 1994.

Westminster post office to be open on MLK day

Westminster's post office is one of several selected stations in the metropolitan area that will be open for abbreviated hours on the Martin Luther King holiday Monday.

The post office, at 83 E. Main St., will have window service from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Carroll YMCA takes part in reciprocal program

Members of the Carroll County Family YMCA will now be welcomed at more than 1,000 YMCAs nationwide as part of a program called AWAY -- Always Welcome at YMCAs.

Carroll members will receive an AWAY sticker for their membership cards at no charge.

Presenting the card at participating Y's will give members access to out-of-town facilities at no charge, or at no more than half the guest fee.

Members can also participate in an out-of-town YMCA program or class.

A directory of Y's participating in AWAY is available at the Carroll Y.

Also, the Carroll County Family YMCA, at 1719 Sykesville Road in Westminster, is now open at 6 a.m. Monday through Friday.

Nominations sought for environment honor

The Carroll County Office of Environmental Services is seeking nominations for the third annual Environmental Awareness Awards.

These are given to individuals, institutions and businesses in appreciation for their achievements in environmental protection and conservation.

Nominations for the 1993 awards will be accepted through Monday, Feb. 22.

Three winners will be selected by the Carroll County Environmental Affairs Advisory Board and awards will be presented by the county commissioners during April, in conjunction with Earth Day celebrations.

The date will be announced later.

Nominations may be submitted in the form of a letter to the Carroll County Office of Environmental Services, 225 N. Center St., Westminster, Md., 21157.

The letter should contain the name of the nominee and reason for the nomination.
