Unemployment rate rises in November

Howard County's unemployment rate increased from 4.6 percent in October to 4.7 percent in November.

The rate had declined each month since August, when it was 5.4 percent.

From October to November, the state unemployment rate increased from 6.4 percent to 6.5 percent, and the Baltimore metropolitan area's rate increased from 7.2 percent to 7.3 percent. Howard has the lowest unemployment rate in the Baltimore region.

Howard's jobless rate was 4.3 percent in November 1991; 3.7 percent in November 1990; 2 percent in November 1989; and 2.3 percent in

November 1988.

Bendix Corp. selected for Texas contract

The Bendix Field Engineering Corp. of Columbia has been selected by the Texas Department of Transportation to provide a freeway traffic management system for the city of San Antonio.

The two-year traffic management project is worth an estimated $32 million.

The initial section will cover around 25 miles of metropolitan area freeways, later expanded to 191 miles.

Involved in the project are technologies associated with intelligent vehicle highway systems: computers, high-speed communications equipment, highway surveillance systems and traveler information devices.

The goal of the entire project is to reduce traffic congestion.

Buschman Design-Build gets contractor award

Buschman Design-Build of Marriottsville was honored last month with a Contractor of the Year Award(COTY) from the Maryland Improvement Contractors Association.

The award recognizes remodeling projects of superior design and craftsmanship.

Buschman Design-Build received its award for "Best Addition Under $75,000" for its Sinex Addition, a two-story project in Long Reach.
