For winner Hinte, N. Harford 10K was all downhill

The Renaissance AllSports Athletic Club bills its North Harford 10K as "medium hilly," but most runners who annually do the loop course in Pylesville know better.

That's because race director Dave Starnes, the cross country and track coach at North Harford High School, had a hand in outlining the course. Before a Harford County ruling prohibited student running off campus, Starnes would train his teams on much of the North Harford course.

In the absence of that, Starnes must content himself with putting the Northern Harford 10K field through his course on the "rolling" hills of northern Harford County.

"There aren't that many [hills], but one of them is a real doozy," said Pat Rebbert, who was waiting for her husband, Jerry, to finish the loop course that begins and finishes at North Harford High School.

Fresh from having run a 50K at Lake Elkhorn in Columbia the previous week, Jeff Hinte, who won the North Harford 10K in 36 minutes, 52 seconds, had a similar perspective.

"This is one of Dave's flat courses," Hinte said with a laugh. "There are only two hills -- one on the way out and one on the way back. This and his loop course [North Harford Loop 10K] so early in the season sort of kick you back into shape."

For those who missed out on Sunday's fun, take heart. The North Harford Loop 10K takes off from the same location on Jan. 31 at 9 a.m. RASAC bills it as a "scenic hilly loop course."

Hinte, an avid ultra-marathoner who together with partner Phil Anderson put on RASAC's 50K in March, knows something about hills. About the 50K in Columbia, which consisted of 17 laps around Lake Elkhorn, he said: "After about 10 laps, you felt like hills. It was rolling enough to keep it from being flat."

In any event, Hinte was glad to have his surprising 32-second victory over second-place finisher Eric Estrada, who usually beats Hinte at shorter distances but who started 1 1/2 minutes after the rest of the field.

"I figured that was my Christmas present from you," Hinte told Estrada. "I kept expecting you to catch me in the last half-mile."
