Hyattsville man charged with robbery

A Hyattsville man who allegedly tried to hold up a historic Annapolis tavern with a BB gun early Sunday was overpowered by two employees and held captive until police arrived, authorities said.

John Jackson, 35, of Riverdale Road was charged with robbery, attempted robbery with a deadly weapon and assault, city police said.

Police said Mr. Jackson allegedly slipped in the unlocked back door of Reynolds Tavern on Church Circle about 45 minutes after it closed at midnight, pointed a pellet gun at the bartender and ordered him to turn over the money in the cash register.

He then allegedly forced five male employees and a female visitor to get on their hands and knees on the floor and frisked them for money, police said.

One of the men crouched on the floor jumped backward, grabbed Mr. Jackson's arm and pinned him down, police said. The employee, identified as Drew Hines, subdued the man with the help of the bartender, Kurt Bragunler.

Police said a woman was waiting in a beige car in front of the tavern when they arrived, but disappeared by the time they got back outside.

Mr. Jackson was being held at the county detention center on $100,000 bond.

Annapolis man charged with kidnapping

An Annapolis man has been charged with kidnapping a 12-year-old girl and taking her along as he robbed a gas station in Annapolis Friday afternoon.

William Burton Moore III, 35, of the 1200 block of Ashton Court was charged by county police Sunday with kidnapping, driving a stolen car and robbing the girl of a few dollars, said Detective Shelly Madison. Annapolis police charged him with holding up a Dunkin' Donuts shop Friday.

Mr. Moore was being held yesterday at the county detention center on a $150,000 bond.

Detective Madison said a robber forced the girl from her sister's car in the Ramada Inn parking lot near the Annapolis Mall about 3:15 p.m. and ordered her to walk with him to a Sunoco station in the 2000 block of West St. He robbed the station, then walked back to the car, forced the girl into it and drove around Annapolis for about an hour before he set the girl free, unharmed at a McDonald's restaurant on Bay Ridge Road and abandoned the vehicle.

The girl, whose sister had been in the hotel at the time of the abduction, called police. About 7:45 p.m., Annapolis police said they arrested Mr. Moore near a Dunkin' Donuts shop in the 1900 block of Fairfax Road after a robbery there minutes earlier.
