Did you see the Newsweek issue about the World War II...

Vito Stellino's picks

January 10, 1993

Did you see the Newsweek issue about the World War II generation, the generation that survived the Depression, won the Good War and presided over the postwar boom?

It made me think of Tom Landry, who came out of a small Texas town, flew bombing runs over Hitler's Germany and put 20 straight winning seasons on the board for the Dallas Cowboys.

The Cowboys are back, but it's just not the same without the Man in the Hat on the sidelines. He certainly represented that generation.

That reminds me that last week, a league official suggested that now that two of Landry's former assistants, Dan Reeves and Mike Ditka, are out of work, an expansion team could unite the three of them the way the Mets brought back Casey Stengel. I guess Tex Schramm is available, too.

Unfortunately, I guess you can't bring back the good ol' days.
