Smoking ban sends O's fans to phones

January 09, 1993|By Mark Hyman

How have baseball fans reacted to the smoking restrictions coming soon to Oriole Park at Camden Yards?

Some are opposed. Some are in favor. And hundreds are calling the Orioles offices to explain why.

From the announcement Thursday morning until 2:30 p.m. yesterday, the Orioles fielded roughly 800 telephone calls from fans eager to comment on the new rules, which prohibit smoking in any of the ballpark's 48,041 seats, said Chrissie Werzinsky of the team's public affairs office.

Werzinsky said calls critical of the restrictions have slightly outnumbered those from supporters. Only a dozen or so customers have asked for ticket refunds, Werzinsky said.
