Chicago Cubs -- Agreed to terms with P Dave Smith on a minor-league contract with Triple-A Iowa and invited him to spring training.

Chicago White Sox -- Named former major-leaguer Paul Casanova bullpen catcher. Signed P Chuck Cary to a Triple-A contract.

Florida Marlins -- Agreed to terms with P Andres Berumen, P Stan Spencer, P Gene Walter and C Terry McGriff on minor-league contracts. Signed P Jim Corsi to a one-year contract.

Houston Astros -- Agreed to terms with OF Chris James on a minor-league contract and invited him to spring training.

Los Angeles Dodgers -- Agreed to minor-league contracts with C Lance Parrish and P Wally Ritchie and invited them to spring training.

Milwaukee Brewers -- Announced that OF Robin Yount is guaranteed $3.53 million under the one-year contract he completed Thursday.

Minnesota Twins -- Agreed to terms with P Bert Blyleven and OF Randy Bush on minor-league contracts and invited them to spring training.

New York Mets -- Agreed to terms with C Charlie O'Brien on a one-year contract and P Dave Telgheder on a minor-league contract.

L Texas Rangers -- SS Jeff Huson filed for salary arbitration.

Toronto Blue Jays -- Agreed to terms with SS Alfredo Griffin on a minor-league contract and invited him to spring training.

Chicago Bulls -- Placed C Scott Williams (tendinitis in right knee) on the injured list.

College

NCAA -- Placed Middle Tennessee State's men's basketball program on two years' probation and barred it from postseason play this year for recruiting violations that occurred from 1987 to 1990. Placed Ashland University men's basketball program on two years' probation and limited its recruiting and scholarships during that time for alleged violations in its program. Reprimanded Princeton lacrosse coach Bill Tierney for his verbal exchanges with officials during the 1992 national championships.

4 Auburn -- Named Jimbo Fisher quarterbacks coach.

Jacksonville -- Announced that basketball F Alonzo Harris, a co-captain, has flunked out of school.

Louisiana Tech -- Announced the resignation of offensive coordinator Pat Tilley.

Pittsburgh -- Named Chuck Driesbach defensive coordinator.

Sacred Heart -- Signed men's basketball coach Dave Bike to a three-year contract.

Southern Cal -- Named following football assistants: David Robinson (coach John Robinson's son), tight ends; Mike Barry, offensive line; Mike Nolan, defensive coordinator-linebackers; Mike Sanford, wide receivers; Doug Smith, defensive line; and Dennis Thurman, defensive backs.

Southwestern Louisiana -- Named Vic Eumont defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach.

Cincinnati Bengals -- Re-signed Jim Anderson, running backs coach; Marv Braden, special teams coach; Jim McNally, offensive line coach; Bob Karmelowicz, defensive line coach; Ron Lynn, defensive coordinator; Ron Meeks, defensive backfield coach; Richard Williamson, receivers coach; and Kim Wood, strength coach.

New England Patriots -- Fired coach Dick MacPherson.

Philadelphia Eagles -- Activated S Andre Waters. Placed QB Casey Weldon on the postseason deactivation list.

NB Seattle Seahawks -- Signed DT Joe Nash to a one-year contract.

Hockey

Boston Bruins -- Waived G Reggie Lemelin, at 38 the oldest player in the NHL.

Edmonton Oilers -- Announced that LW Vladimir Vujtek, who had been suspended for refusing to report to AHL Cape Breton, will play this weekend for Cape Breton.

Pittsburgh Penguins -- Sent D Bryan Fogarty to IHL Cleveland fo two weeks of conditioning. Assigned F Mike Needham and D Peter Ahola to Cleveland.
