Around the house

* Be sure to label all boxes that contain holiday decorations before storing. This will avoid the hassle of opening several boxes when looking for things such as lights, wreaths and ornaments.

* Organize spice rack. Discard old spices. Wipe off jars or cans with a damp cloth. Place spices in alphabetical order for quick accessibility and store in a cool, dry place.

* Remove cigarette smoke odor from room. Set out one or two shallow bowls of vinegar.

* Freshen stale odors in your humidifier. Pour 3 or 4 capfuls of bottled lemon juice into the water.

* Avoid scraping ice from the windshield of your car. Slip a portion of a paper shopping bag under wipers that are pointing straight up. The next morning, simply remove bag and windshield should be clear.

* Spray top of refrigerator with an ammonia solution. Let sit for one minute to break down greasy film. Wipe off with paper towel.

In the garden

* If you have a cold north window, there are houseplants that can survive this location. Try such foliage plants as Boston fern, English ivy and strawberry begonia.
