Green Hornets 8-10 team soars in Hyattsville, Fallston tourneys

The Severna Park Green Hornets 8-10 county league team recently won two holiday basketball tournaments.

In the championship game of the sixth-grade St. Jerome of Hyattsville Tournament, the Hornets trimmed St. Mark's, 43-40, with the help of four sixth-graders from last year's 8-10 Severna ,, Park squad.

James Bowen led the winners with 14 points, going 7-for-7 from the field and collecting four rebounds. Derek Dixon and Richard Tuohey (five rebounds) added eight and six points, respectively.

Other scorers included Sheldon Chase (five), Marcus Johnson and Gill Goodrich (four each) and Jerrod Ross (two).

Severna Park also won the Fallston Holiday tournament, defeating EDRECO, 36-20, and Towson, 46-13, for the title.

Dion Gough led the Hornets in scoring for the tournament with 22 points, followed by Derek Dixon and Jerrod Ross (14 points each), Gill Goodrich (nine), Natalie Hicks (six), Michael Floyd, Nick Richards and Travis Johnson, (four each), and Trevon Quinn, Lionel Jennings and John Garrett (two points each).


The Severna Park youth wrestling team finished sixth in the 10th annual Manchester (Carroll County) Holiday Tournament.

Corey Bowers (45 pounds) and co-captain Josh White (122) placed first in their weight classes. White was named the tournament's Most Valuable Wrestler.

Matt Eveleth (55), Rick Boulay (60), Eric Schaffer (95) and co-captain Brian Kingsbury (130) all placed second to reigning state champions.

Mike Stewart (85) John Horrigan (100) finished third, and Gene Serago placed fifth. Adam Necessary (55) and Matt White (80) each won a match.

Severna Park will play host to Perry Hall at Severna Park High School on Saturday.

Girls soccer

The Severna Park Soccer Association Kickers improved their regular-season record to 5-0-1 in the Myers Pavilion 12-and-under girls Friday Night League.

Last Friday, the Kickers shut out the Harundale Hurricane, 6-0, as Tara Theis led all scorers with two goals. Jill Jones, Heather Torres, Jessica Baker and Laura Basil each had one.

In previous games, the Kickers tied the Harford United Flash, defeated CHISCO, 2-1, and the Baltimore Strikers, 5-1.

Tracy Mrazeck scored two goals in the Harford game, and Sarah Meehan added an assist. Theis and Laura Basil each scored a goal in the CHISCO win, and Mrazeck (two goals), Charlene Larsen (one goal, one assist), Meehan and Basil furnished the offensive firepower against the Strikers.

The Kickers went 1-1-1 in the Clarence "Du" Burns Holiday Tournament, defeating Parkville, 3-2, tying Rosedale, 4-4, and losing to KVE Cockeysville, 4-0. Jones led the way with two goals in the Parkville win.


The standings of the Pasadena Senior Volleyball Association are: Norwood Garage 17-3, Pro Jersey 15-9, Sunsetters 13-11, Guardex 12-12, Printed Apparel 3-25.

Results include: Guardex 4, Printed Apparel 0 (15-8, 15-6, 15-9, 15-5); Pro Jersey 3, Sunsetters 1 (15-9, 15-9, 15-8, 13-15); Sunsetters 3, Printed Apparel 1 (15-5, 15-10, 15-9, 11-15).
