Carroll Transit's request for help is put on hold

Carroll Transit System officials didn't get the response they were hoping for in a meeting with county commissioners yesterday.

Carroll Transit officials had hoped for a financial commitment from the commissioners at yesterday's meeting, but will have to wait about another week to hear if they will get some financial and in-kind support.

The private, non-profit agency contracts with the county, state and other private agencies to provide public transportation. State cuts and policy changes this year threaten to leave the agency with a deficit of approximately $70,000.

Carroll Transit has asked the county to provide maintenance for the fleet for a $25-an-hour labor charge, compared to the $37 an hour the agency pays a private firm. Other requests include a loan to buy software that would allow more efficient routing and billing.

County Attorney Charles W. Thompson Jr. said he was optimistic about an arrangement with Carroll Transit, but that he needs to work out some legal details.

He said he hopes to be able to advise the commissioners by Jan. 15.

The Carroll Transit board will meet Jan. 15 to reassess the fate of the agency.

Although the board is considering closing the agency, members and Executive Director Linda Boyer are hoping to find solutions to the crisis.

Board member Peggie Roland said that if the county responds positively to the agency's requests by Jan. 15, it is possible the board will go ahead and keep the agency open, despite a problem with cash flow.
