$ J. JOSEPH CURRAN JR.

EDUCATION: A.A., University of Baltimore. LL.B., University of Baltimore Law School.

POLITICAL EXPERIENCE:

Maryland House of Delegates, 1958-1963. Maryland Senate, 1963-1983. Judicial Proceedings Committee chairman, 1967-1983. Lieutenant governor, 1983-1987. Attorney general, 1987-present.

OTHER EXPERIENCE: Has chaired or served on numerous task forces, on topics including the drinking driver, the legal defense of insanity, victims' services, medical malpractice insurance.

PARRIS N. GLENDENING

AGE: 50

HOME: University Park, Prince George's County

FAMILY: Married, one son.

EDUCATION: B.A., M.A., and Ph.D., all in political science, Florida State University.

POLITICAL EXPERIENCE: City councilman and police commissioner, Hyattsville, 1973-1974. Prince George's County Council, 1974-1982, including two years as chairman. Prince George's County executive, 1982 to present.

OTHER EXPERIENCE: An associate professor at the University of Maryland, he still teaches one course a semester and has written textbooks and articles on government and the financing of government services.

HOME: Mitchellville, Prince George's County

EDUCATION: A.A., Prince George's Community College. B.A., University of Maryland. Further studies, Johns Hopkins University.

POLITICAL EXPERIENCE: Prince George's County Commission, 1970-1971. Chairman, Prince George's County Council, 1971-1974. Prince George's County executive, 1974-1978. Maryland secretary of state, 1987-present.

OTHER EXPERIENCE: Businessman, involved primarily in food services and cable television broadcasting. Also chairman, since of nonprofit corporation that operates hospitals, nursing homes and health centers in Prince George's County.

MELVIN A. STEINBERG

AGE: 59

HOME: Pikesville

FAMILY: Married, three children.

EDUCATION: A.A., University of Baltimore. J.D., University of Baltimore Law School.

POLITICAL EXPERIENCE: Maryland Senate, 1967-1987. Finance Committee chairman, 1979-1983. Senate president, 1983-87. Lieutenant governor, 1987-present.

OTHER EXPERIENCE: Lawyer. Chairman of Peabody Institute Oversight Committee, Maryland Executive Helicopter Advisory Committee. Former chairman, Governor's Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse.

OTHER EXPERIENCE: Helped run family store. Commercial loan officer, Annapolis Bank & Trust Co, 1982-1986. Vice president, external affairs, The Johns Hopkins Health System, 1987-1990. Former chairman, Governor's Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse.

WILLIAM S. SHEPARD

AGE: 57

HOME: Potomac

FAMILY: Married, two children.

EDUCATION: A.B., Wesleyan University. J.D., Harvard Law School.

POLITICAL EXPERIENCE: Unsuccessful congressional candidate, 1986. President, Montgomery County Republican Club, 1987. Director of congressional affairs, U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency, 1987-1989. Unsuccessful candidate for governor, 1990.

OTHER EXPERIENCE: Lawyer and career foreign service officer, State Department, 1964-1985, including tours in Saigon, Vietnam; Athens, Greece; and Budapest, Hungary. Consultant to Department of Agriculture for regarding tariff negotiations and their implications for domestic food programs, 1991-1992.
