MIAMI -- One day after Bill Walsh was appointed Stanford coach last January, he was prowling the suburbs of Bakersfield, Calif., on a recruiting mission.

Penn State's key players: QB Kerry Collins (64 of 137 passes for 925 yards, four TDs) will start in place of injured John Sacca. RB Richie Anderson (900 yards on 195 carries, 18 TDs) averaged 10.55 points per game, second best in nation. WR O. J. McDuffie (63 receptions for 977 yards, nine TDs) has broken or tied 15 school records, including season receptions (63), season yardage (977), career receptions (125) and all-purpose season yardage (1,831).

Stanford's key players: LB Ron George (15 sacks) leads a defense that allowed only 280.8 yards per game (125 rushing, 155.8 passing) and 16.1 points. QB Steve Stenstrom (197 of 335 for 2,399 yards, 14 TDs) has two primary targets: SE Mike Cook (51 receptions for 649 yards) and WR Justin Armour (36 receptions for 626 yards, seven TDs). RB Glyn Milburn (851 yards rushing, eight TDs) had 573 yards in punt returns, including three for TDs.
