Ronald Rhodes' 41-point, 11-rebound performance was too much for Wilde Lake last night, as Calvert defeated the Wildecats, 80-67, in the Southern-AA Christmas Tournament final.

Deon Wingfield scored 28 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for Wilde Lake, but it was the smooth, 6-foot-5 Rhodes who made the difference down the stretch with his hanging jump shots and slashing drives to the basket.

"No. 42 [Rhodes] had a great game, we just couldn't stop him. He's a real nice ballplayer," said Wilde Lake coach Paul Ellis.

The Wildecats (3-3) took a 24-18 lead at the end of the first quarter, but the Cavaliers (7-0) tied it at 38 by halftime. Calvert went on an 8-2 run during the first two minutes of the third quarter to go up 46-40, but the Wildecats cut the lead to 56-53 at the end of the quarter.

Rhodes (11-for-12 from the free-throw line) led the Cavaliers of Calvert County on a 24-14 fourth-quarter run, scoring 14 points.

"We didn't run our offense well, and we didn't box out; those were the two main factors in the game," said Ellis. "I'm happy with our effort. We hung in there with them for a little while."

Point guard Josh Girton added nine points and six assists for Wilde Lake, and Ramon Myers scored eight points.

In the consolation game, Southern was beaten by Great Mills of )) St. Mary's County, 78-60. Jesse Moreland scored a game-high 30 points.

The Bulldogs (4-3) saw a 17-13, first-quarter lead evaporate late in the second quarter when they were outscored 23-13.

Terrell Jones led Southern with 24 points, followed by Kevin Mason's 10. The Hornets also received 23 points from Moreland's backcourt mate, Marvin Carter.
