Ellicott City man, 44, dies after being hit by car Monday Icy roads may be to blame, police say

A 44-year-old Ellicott City man who was struck by a car as he walked along an icy road Monday morning died of his injuries early yesterday, Howard County police said.

Raymond Herman Hartman, of the 8800 block of Town & County Blvd., was pronounced dead at 2:25 a.m. yesterday at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where he has been hospitalized since the accident, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Mr. Hartman was walking along Route 104 near Grove Road in Ellicott City when he was struck about 6:30 a.m. Monday by a Honda driven by Robert Joseph Stangie, 23, of the 8500 block of Autumn Harvest, police said.

Mr. Hartman's dark clothing, and the icy, wet roads may have contributed to the accident, police said.

Mr. Stangie was not injured, police said.

No charges have been filed.

Police are continuing their investigation of the accident.
