McCarl tops 'B' volleyball Recreation roundup

The Eddie McCarl squad, which had placed third during th regular season, won seven of eight tournament games against three opponents to win the the Carroll County Men's Volleyball League B Division title.

In the best-of-five championship match, it topped regular-season champion C. J. Miller, 15-12, 16-14, 11-15, 15-10.

Earlier in the evening, McCarl had downed the Young Guns, 15-12, 15-4, in a preliminary match. It then ousted the second-place Grateful Dead, which had led the the division most of the year, 15-7, 15-10.

C. J. Miller, which had wrested the title from the Dead in a showdown on the final night of the regular season, qualified for the championship by holding off Al Parks in a semifinal, 15-13, 17-15.

Boys basketball

The Winfield Warriors swept three games to win the Carroll County Boys Basketball League B Division Holiday Tournament at West Middle School in Taneytown.

The champs opened by beating North Carroll, 43-24, behind forward Kevin Damiano's 12 points. Damiano again had 12 when the Warriors opened a 21-15 halftime lead and coasted past Gamber-Smallwood, 48-30, in their second contest.

Winfield then topped Westminster in the championship game, 33-23, behind guard Justin Robertson's 12 points and the rebounding of center Dave Keefer. Center Ajaya Smith led Westminster with 10 points and 16 rebounds.

Westminster opened the tournament by topping St. John's29-19, as guard Jon David Byers hit 10 of 13 shots to lead all scorers with 21 points. Clinton Woodyard had seven points and Byers six, as Westminster topped St. Joseph's, 32-18, in its second game.

Girls basketball

The Westminster Lightning topped Mount Airy No. 2, 37-31, in the first Carroll County Girls Basketball League Holiday Tournament senior division championship game.

The game was close most of the way, with the two teams tied at 19 at halftime and at 29 after three quarters.

But Westminster outscored Mount Airy, 8-2, in the fourth quarter to win it.

Jill Ibex led all scorers with 13 points, and Shannon Wynne added 12.

Shannon Henley led Mount Airy with 11 points and Jamie Yokay had 10. Mount Airy had qualified by beating Mount Airy No. 3 and Winfield.

* In the junior-division finale, Westminster No. 2 topped Mount Airy No. 1, 22-11. Forward Kyrica Frisby led Westminster with 14 points, and Katie Jenkins led Mount Airy with four.
