Clarksville home destroyed in fire

A fire destroyed a single-family home in Clarksville and injured a firefighter early yesterday morning.

The three-alarm fire at the 12500 block of Clarksville Pike caused about $300,000 in damage -- $220,000 to the structure and the rest in contents, according to fire officials.

One firefighter was treated for a minor leg injury at Howard County General Hospital and was released hours later.

"The house was totally destroyed," said Lt. Michael W. Gearhart, a fire department spokesman. "It was a complete loss." He said firefighters saved two vehicles that were near the house by pushing them away.

Firefighters from Clarksville, Rivers Park, West Friendship and Sandy Spring in Montgomery County were called to battle the blaze. "The building was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived," Lieutenant Gearhart said. "There were flames shooting through the roof."

The state fire marshal's office is investigating.
