Math teacher Barbara Barr and science teacher Pieta Shukwit, two Notre Dame Prep teachers, recently received a $12,000 grant from the GTE Corp. to introduce an innovative interdisciplinary math and science program.

William McClain, a music student in the visual and performing arts program at Suitland High School, has been selected to attend the Congressional Youth Leadership Council in Washington in February.

Joy Cruess, a reading specialist at Trinity School in Ellicott City, has been awarded a Conference Scholarship to attend the annual Orton Dyslexia Society Conference in Cincinnati, Ohio, by the Maryland Branch of the Orton Dyslexia Society.

Michael J. Betenbaugh, an assistant professor in the department of chemical engineering at the Johns Hopkins University, has won a 1992 National Science Foundation Young Investigator Award.

Dr. John W. Payne received the Baltimore City Medical Society's Community Service Award for his work as director of volunteer physicians at the Joseph Richey House.

Dr. Leeds Barroll, professor of English at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, has won the Bernard Hewitt Award for his study, "Politics, Plague and Shakespeare's Theatre: The Stuart Years."

Ellen D. Hoadley, assistant professor of management information systems at Loyola College, was selected as the 1992-'93 Richard D. Irwin Fellow for the 1992 Richard D. Irwin/Beta Gamma Sigma National Seminar held recently in San Diego.
