Taneytown decks houses, businesses to win prizes

Taneytown residents have decked the halls, walls and doors in the holiday spirit, and a few of them profited during the Taneytown Heritage Committee's Holiday Decorating Contest.

Prizes from $50 to $25, donated by the Taneytown Chamber of Commerce and the committee, were given to residences and businesses for originality, space usage and theme.

"Everyone really had nice displays, but the ones that received prizes really did a good job," said Fairy Flickenger, chair of the contest committee.

The entrants were judged on Dec. 16 by Beth Sparks, a member of the Carroll County Garden Club from New Windsor, Julia Lockard, a retired extension agent from Uniontown and Dorothy Lefevre, a retired teacher from Westminster.

The contest had 27 entrants, 21 homes and six businesses.

NB First-prize winners received $50 in the business group, $40 in

the residential group, with second- and third-prize winners getting $25, Mrs. Flickenger said.

Three honorable mentions received $10 prizes.

Top honors for business decorating went to Hair Talk in Taneytown Shopping Center for its display by employees Debbie Martin and Monica Scott.

The first-place residential overall prize when to Pat Godwin of the 300 block of E. Baltimore Street, and the first-place doorway prize went to Susan Trumpower of Starboard Drive.

Second prize in the business group went to The Bow Hunter's Den, 21 E. Baltimore St.; third place, Feeser's Agway, 65 Frederick St.

For residential overall, second prize went to Lisa and Larry Hersch, 44, York St. Second prize for the doorway category was Samuel Breth, 213 Carroll Heights Road.

Gail Ansari of Carnival Drive, Mildred Lambert of Fairgrounds Avenue and W.S. German of Roberts Mill Road received honorable mentions.
