Crownsville man charged with assault

A Crownsville man was charged with assault with intent to murder after police said he tried to stab an officer in the hand as the officer tried to arrest him late Sunday.

Police reported a passer-by waved down Officer Anthony Mills, who was off duty and near Coale's Amoco station in the 1300 block of General's Highway, at 11:50 p.m. The officer was told a man had been seen tampering with several cars in the station's sparking lot. Officer Mills found the man and called for additional units.

When the suspect saw the other officers arrive, he ran into a nearby home in the 1200 block of General's Highway. Officers tracked the man to the home and knocked on the door. A woman who answered agreed to let the officers search her home.

Officer Paul Roberts found the suspect, Tony Robert Weatherholtz, 22, in the kitchen of the home. Mr. Weatherholtz reportedly grabbed a kitchen knife and tried to stab Officer Roberts as the officer tried to arrest him.

Mr. Weatherholtz ran to an upstairs bedroom, the police report said, where he barricaded himself for a short time before agreeing to come out.

Mr. Weatherholtz also was charged with attempted auto theft and trespassing, police said.
