Will Magee make move? Coach denies Westminster plans

Former Liberty High football coach John Magee denied Friday night that he is planning to become coach at Westminster High.

A little more than 24 hours after he announced his resignation at Liberty, Magee said: "I'm not positioning myself to be the coach at Westminster. I keep hearing that talk, but it's not true."

Westminster coach Jeff Oeming has been involved in a lot of controversy since a scuffle on Labor Day with Owls wide receiver Micah Shaffer.

Magee said he planned to stay out of football coaching at least a season and "then I'll find something to do. I'll probably coach something else at Liberty. There was no pressure on me to resign. It was just time to move on and spend time with my children who are involved in recreation and high school sports."

Oeming said last night he will not resign at Westminster despite all the problems he encountered this season.

He talked enthusiastically about working his players in the weight room every night in preparation for the 1993 season.

Magee said Dale Greene, his assistant at Liberty, might be interested in replacing him.

"Dale works at Spring Grove and he doesn't want to risk that job for the small amount of pay he would get to be the head football coach," said Magee. "But if he can do both, he might."

Magee said there already has been a call from a person outside the school who is interested in replacing him.

"I have no idea who it is," said Magee.

Magee said he actually decided a year ago to resign at the end of the past season but he didn't make it official until now.

The Lions were 1-9 in 1992, ending a 17-game losing streak over two seasons under Magee, who had a career mark of 15-55 in seven years, including 5-5 in 1988.

"He's a class individual who brought a lot more to this program than what the win-loss record shows," said Liberty athletic director Bob Henard.

"He was a positive influence on the kids and, despite some difficult times, always handled things with a great deal of professionalism."

Henard added there is no timetable set on hiring a new coach. Magee remains as head of the physical education department at Liberty.

Meanwhile, North Carroll also is looking for a football coach after Randy Clark's resignation was made official Friday night.

North Carroll athletic director Ed Powelson insisted Friday night that the school "absolutely has no one in mind to replace Randy Clark."

Powelson said he and North Carroll principal Greg Eckles decided to wait until after the holidays to search for a new coach.

"A lot of things are up in the air," said Powelson. "Of course we would have to have a teaching opening if we hire a coach who also teaches at the school."

Clark said he plans to continue teaching health education at North Carroll, closing up one possible opening for a new coach.

"I hate to see Randy go," said Powelson. "His heart was in the right place. But he made a decision around Thanksgiving to give it up."

Clark, whose Panthers were 0-10 in 1992, stepped down after five seasons at North Carroll in which he compiled an 8-42 record.

"The winless season had something to do with it," said Clark. "When you're having success, you can teach kids. But when you're losing, you lose credibility. You just don't have the positive input."
