25 Years Ago (week of Dec. 10-16, 1967):

* C. Merritt Pumphrey was named Deputy Clerk of the Howard County Circuit Court this week. He was appointed to succeed the late William Gaither, who had passed away following a heart attack on Nov. 30.

* The county Planning Commission abandoned plans to bury high tension power lines planned for the county after learning that the cost of the project was estimated at $29.8 million. The cost for equivalent overhead lines would be $2 million. 50 Years Ago (week of Dec. 13-19, 1942):

* Funeral services were held this week for Edward Lea Ellicott of Rockland Farm, near Florence. Ellicott, 72, was the great-grandson of George Ellicott, one of the founders of Ellicott's Mills (later renamed Ellicott City). Information for this column was compiled by Diane Mullaly from the files of the Howard County Historical Society's library.
