A day's work can include an auto wreck, a funeral, a home run, a chance to capture in a portrait an unexpected, instantaneous flutter of emotion across a person's face. News waits for no one, so instinct plays as crucial a role as technical skill: Great photographers have a knack for being in the right place at the right moment.

We never know what to anticipate when we ask Sun photographers to submit their favorite photographs for our year-end issue. Yet they never disappoint: Their selections are the pictures that captivated us, tugged our heartstrings and piqued our curiosity during the year that was 1992. We decided to let them tell you what moved them about these pictures.
