Ouch! English adventurers Sir Ranulph Fiennes and Michael Stroud are more than halfway to the South Pole in the first unassisted crossing of Antarctica, an expedition spokesman said yesterday. The pair had penetrated "well within 400 miles of the South Pole and 1,300 miles of their own destination at Scott Base," said spokesman David Harrison.

Mr. Fiennes, 49, and Mr. Stroud, 36, hope to raise $3.2 million for the Multiple Sclerosis Society. They are dragging 400-pound sleds behind them during the estimated 100-day crossing.

Streisand signs deal for Sony songs, films

Barbra Streisand has signed a music and movie deal with Sony USA that sources say will run for 10 years with a maximum payoff of $60 million.

Sony Corp. of Japan and its subsidiary, Sony USA, announced the pact without details. But Sony USA Vice Chairman Michael Schulhof said, "Barbra is an important part of the Sony family." Ms.Streisand, 50, directed and starred in a drama from Columbia Pictures last year, "Prince of Tides." She has won eight Grammy awards, as well as Tony, Academy and Golden Globe awards.

CBS chooses team for magazine show

Correspondents Bernard Goldberg and Edie Magnus will join anchor Connie Chung in a CBS News magazine show now in the planning stages, CBS News President Eric Ober announced yesterday. He said the team would begin work on the show soon.

Mr. Goldberg is a special correspondent for "48 Hours," and Ms. Magnus is the health and medical correspondent for the "CBS Evening News With Dan Rather."

Doctors see danger in use of holy water

Administering holy water to the seriously ill can sometimes threaten life rather than speed recovery. Writing in the Medical Journal in Britain, two doctors contend they discovered the risk while fighting to save a teen-ager who had jumped from an upper-floor apartment.

The patient was making a good recovery when he developed an unusual bacterial infection that led to pneumonia. The source of the infection came to light when hospital staff saw the patient's aunt liberally sprinkling him with holy water, the doctors said.

"We suspect that such transmission is in fact more common than realized and may represent a significant source of infection in critically ill patients that will not be noticed until specifically sought," they wrote.
