Westminster wins 2 of 3

Westminster won two of three matches in a recent competition in the Maryland Junior Wrestling League. It downed Friends School, 76-18, and Lansdowne, 64-29, and lost to Back River, 51-42.

Westminster took a big lead in its early bouts against Friends. Chris Reiter (70 pounds), Travis Mohlehenrich (75), Tim Sharkey (100), Ryan Lusby (107) and Jason Blair (122) won on pins and Jim Sharkey (150) on a 20-9 decision.

The story was the same against Lansdowne, with Westminster cruising after jumping ahead early.

Against Back River, Westminster stayed even early but fell behind in the middle weights.

Winning on pins for Westminster were Dustin Clayton (60) and Matt Long (90).

* In an all-county meeting, the South Carroll-based Warriors Wrestling Club pulled away to beat Francis Scott Key, 65-24.

Francis Scott Key also dropped a 54-34 match to Reisterstown. Bobby Biden and Steve Hoff (130) pinned their opponents and Darren Hooper (75) took a 9-0 decision for Key.

* Jason Simons was the big man for Manchester this weekend as it topped Severna Park, 44-42.

Manchester had it much easier with Parkville, crushing the Baltimore County team, 62-22.

St. John's basketball

* Grades K-2 -- Josh Tippett and Tim Johnson each scored four points to lead the Panthers to a 14-8 win over the Hornets. Chris Swartz had six for the Hornets.

The Eagles topped the Magic, 16-8. Ben McQuigg scored six points for the Eagles and Shawn Wynne added four. Bryant Graham had six for the Magic.

Jeff Kreslin's eight points paced the Spurs to an 18-6 win over the Cavs. Chris Yingling added four. Bryce Geiman scored four for the Cavs.

Tim McKenzie and Brandon Reisdorf each had four points in the Lions' 8-2 win over the Owls.

* Grades 3-4 -- Zach Gayhart's 10 points led the Sonics to a 20-12 win over the Celtics. Paul Smith led the Celtics with eight.

The Nets ripped the Suns, 22-1, behind Antoinne Magruder's 10 points.

Jamie Barley scored eight points to lead the Jazz to a 14-6 win over the Rockets. Raf Bridges had five for the Rockets.

Todd Groft had four points in the Spurs' 10-2 victory over the Pistons.

The Knicks edged the Terps, 5-4, as Mike Thompson and Justin McDaniel each scored two points. Mike Denmead had the Terps' four points.

* Grade 5-6 -- Grey topped Red, 15-6, as Brett Whitson led the winners with eight points and Justin Little added four. Blue beat White, 10-4.

* Under-12 girls -- Laurie Kiler scored a goal with 30 seconds left in the game to lead North Carroll to a 4-3 win over the Freedom Strikers.

The winners overcame a 3-0 lead the South Carroll-based squad had built early in the second half on two goals by Jen Katz and one by Melanie Amoss.

* Under-14 girls -- North Carroll nipped Fiore's, 2-1, on a second-half goal by Chiara Deiaco. Lisa McCully also scored for the winners.

* 35-and-over -- The Jokers edged the Sting, 7-6. The Baltimore/Carroll County-based Jokers had taken a 5-0 lead in the second half before the Carroll-based Sting rallied.

* 19-34 -- Liberty Lightning defeated Reisterstown, 13-2. Chris Walton scored four goals, Greg Carfine three, and Chad Norfolk two for the winners.

* The Blazing Soccers led all the way to defeat Westminster, 8-3, as Chris Vasse led the way with four goals.

* Under-8 boys -- Seven players scored goals to lead the Nasty Boys to a 7-1 win over Winfield. Kevin Teal, Justin Van Horn, Nick McGinnis, Brian Timchula, Steven Evens, Eddie Ashwell and Chad Reese scored for the Nasty Boys.
