BLACK POWDER OPENER

Maryland's black powder season for deer opens Saturday and will run through Jan. 2, excluding Sundays, in all counties. Legal weapons for muzzleloader season are shotguns or rifles of at least .40 caliber and charged with not less than 60 grains of powder.

Black powder handguns also may be used so long as they are at least .40 caliber, use not less than 40 grains of powder and have a barrel at least six inches long.

In all cases, weapons must shoot a single bullet or ball at a time.

Through Feb. 10: Snow goose season, 4 per day.

Through Jan. 20: Canada goose season, two per day.

Through Jan. 9: Duck season, three per day under proper guidelines.

Saturday-Jan. 2: Muzzleloader season for deer.

Saturday: MCM hike at Little Bennett Regional Park in Montgomery County. Sunday: MCM hike along C&O Canal from Snyders Landing to Cedar Grove. For more information, call (410) 442-5785.

Through Jan. 30: Bow season for deer (bow may be used during balance of firearms and muzzleloader seasons, but hunter orange must be worn).

Monday-Dec. 26: Dove season, 12 per day.

Wednesday: MCM hike in Avalon area of Patapsco State Park. For more information, call 242-8091.
