Carroll residents oppose Springfield hospital transfers

Members of the new South Carroll Coalition are circulating a petition to get signatures in opposition to the transfer of potentially violent patients and juvenile delinquents to Springfield Hospital Center in Sykesville.

"We are mailing petition sheets and sending them out through area PTAs," said Kathleen D. Horneman, one of the founders of the group. "Also, about 20 members are distributing them throughout the area."

She said she expects to get about 800 signatures to deliver to Del. Richard Dixon, D-Carroll, before the Maryland General Assembly convenes in January.

Signers are asking the state to halt efforts to relocate 18 "potentially dangerous" people from the Rosewood Center in Baltimore County. They also oppose the transfer of any juvenile offenders who are "adjudged violent by virtue of their criminal acts and records."

* Eldersburg: Sykesville and Gamber responded to a house fire on Mineral Hill Road at 12:26 p.m. Monday. Units were out for 21 minutes.
