Will Bowie bite for Bay Birds? Stay tuned . . .

December 13, 1992|By Kent Baker

Officials of the Orioles' Double-A franchise in Bowie will

choose the team's nickname this week after reeceiving 3,500 suggestions from fans. Almost 1,100 different names were offered.

"As far as we can tell, it's the most response anybody's ever gotten for naming a team," said Peter Kirk, chairman of Maryland Baseball Limited Partnership. "The majority came from Prince George's County, but we got them from as far away as California."

One fan sarcastically submitted "Homeless," but that suggestion did not make the final list. The club hasn't broken ground for a new stadium, and could spend the first three months of the season playing at several sites. Possible sites include Memorial Stadium, RFK Stadium in Washington, the University of Maryland in College Park, Bowie State University and Grove Stadium, home of the Frederick Keys, which Kirk's group also owns.

The eight nicknames in the running are Bay Birds, Bay Sox, Blue Crabs, Express, Nationals, Racers, Rockfish and Buoys.

The list will be submitted to Bowie city officials tomorrow morning for their consideration. Then the club will make its final determination.
