Around the house

* Add a festive touch to your holiday table. Use cookie cutters in various shapes such as bells, Santas and Christmas trees as napkins rings.

* Dry hand-washed sweaters easily. Place a child's safety gate over bathtub and lay the garment flat to dry.

* Wrap rubber bands or string around the base of candles that will not fit into holders. Or try slipping a small, fluted candy wrapper on the end of candle for a snug fit.

* When baking cookies, do all the mixing one day and refrigerate the dough; the baking can be done on another day. This will create less confusion and mess.

* If you are having a party and have run out of space in your refrigerator or cooler, items like sodas and dips can be stored outside. A porch or a garage is a perfect storage place if the temperature is between 35 and 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

* In a hurry for your morning coffee? Once a week, measure the desired amount of coffee into seven filters. Stack each filter into a coffee can and store in the freezer. Each morning, simply pop a filter into the coffee maker for brewing.

In the garden

* Keep blooming gift plants such as poinsettias away from sunlight, heat ducts and drafts. Remove foil covering from pot and place plant on a gravel-filled saucer to allow adequate drainage. Water when soil is dry to the touch.
