Firefighters do double duty at house

Sykesville firefighters responded twice in eight hours Wednesday to the same house on Caren Drive in Eldersburg.

In the first call at 9:32 a.m. Wednesday, firefighters investigated a report of an odor of smoke in a house.

The units were unable to locate any fire and returned to service in 19 minutes.

At 5:33 p.m., units from Sykesville, Gamber and Winfield returned to the same house for a chimney fire. The firefighting crews were out of service for 45 minutes on the second call.

The occupants could not be reached for comment on Thursday, but neighbors said the family was able to remain in the building after the fire was extinguished.


* Sykesville: Fire units from the Sykesville station were dispatched Wednesday to assist Howard County in the investigation of a reported fire in a building on Fairground Road. The alarm at 6:52 a.m. required 17 minutes to investigate.
