Yellow Jackets win Early-Bird tourney

The Linthicum-Ferndale Yellow Jackets won the inaugura Anne Arundel Optimist Invitational Early-Bird 11-12 boys basketball tournament last week at Brooklyn Park/Lindale Junior Middle School.

The Yellow Jackets of Ron Brown defeated the Anne Arundel Optimist Thunder, 48-21, in Friday's tournament opener.

Linthicum-Ferndale opened with a full-court press and quickly built an 11-6 first-quarter lead.

With Adam Sutton and Chad Brown running the fast break to near perfection, the Yellow Jackets claimed a 25-13 halftime lead.

Sutton finished as the game's leading scorer with nine points, followed by teammates David Dolch and William Klemkowski with eight apiece.

Joe Anarino chipped in six points for the Yellows Jackets, and Brown, Mark Sutton and Jake Clark each finished with four.

Erik Larson and Ryan George finished up the scoring for the victors with three and two points, respectively.

In Sunday's championship game, Linthicum-Ferndale trailed Galesville 24-19 at the half, but fought back to claim a 46-41 victory and the tournament crown.

The Yellow Jackets took control of the boards in the fourth quarter, and their timely foul shooting helped them outscore Galesville 18-9 in the final period.

Brown hit five of eight free throws down the stretch, and Anarino made five of nine from the line.

Dolch led all scorers with 17 points, followed by Brown with 11.

Sutton, whose ball-handling skills enabled the Yellow Jackets to break the full-court press, finished with nine points.

Anarino chipped in seven points and Larson added two.
