Atlanta Braves -- Agreed to terms with National League Cy Young Award winner Greg Maddux, a free agent, on a five-year, $28 million contract. Traded P Charlie Leibrandt and P Pat Gomez to the Texas Rangers for minor-league 3B Jose Oliva.

Orioles -- Named Bob Miscik manager at Triple-A Rochester.

Boston Red Sox -- Agreed to terms with OF Andre Dawson on a two-year contract. Traded OF Phil Plantier to the San Diego Padres for P Jose Melendez.

Chicago Cubs -- Agreed to terms with P Randy Myers on a three-year contract.

Cincinnati Reds -- Agreed to terms with P Tim Burke on a minor-league contract.

Detroit Tigers -- Agreed to terms with P Mike Moore on a three-year contract.

Florida Marlins -- Agreed to terms with OF Geronimo Berroa.

Los Angeles Dodgers -- Agreed to terms with P Todd Worrell on a three-year contract. Traded P Zak Shinnal to the Cleveland Indians for P Allen Walden.

Minnesota Twins -- Agreed to terms with P Jim Deshaies on a one-year contract.

Montreal Expos -- Traded P Mark Gardner and P Doug Piatt to the Kansas City Royals for C Tim Spehr and P Jeff Shaw.

Philadelphia Phillies -- Agreed to terms with OF Milt Thompson on a two-year contract.

St. Louis Cardinals -- Agreed to terms with C Hector Villanueva to a one-year contract.

San Francisco Giants -- Agreed to terms with OF Dave Martinez on a two-year contract.

Basketball

Charlotte Hornets -- Traded F J. R. Reid to the San Antonio Spurs for reserve F Sidney Green and two draft picks. The Hornets will receive the Spurs' top pick next year, unless San Antonio is among the top eight picks in the draft lottery. In that case, Charlotte would receive the Spurs' second-round pick next year. The top pick would then move to 1994 with the stipulation that it not be among the top six in the lottery. The Hornets will receive an unconditional first-round pick in 1995 should they not receive the top choice in 1993 or '94. If the Hornets receive the top pick in either 1993 or 1994, then the Spurs also will send a second-round pick to Charlotte in 1996.

Golden State Warriors -- Placed F Billy Owens on the injury list. Activated G Keith Jennings from the injury list.

Fayetteville Flyers (Global Basketball Association) -- Signed G Rodney Monroe (St. Maria Goretti).

Colleges

NCAA -- Placed New Mexico's athletic program on three years' probation. Placed Clemson's men's basketball program on two years' probation; prohibited any expense-paid, on-campus visits

by basketball recruits next year and permitted only two visits in NTC 1994; prohibited off-campus recruiting until Aug. 6; and allowed one less scholarship each of the next two years.

UC Santa Barbara -- Announced F Rob Ramaker will sit out th 1992-93 season as a redshirt because of ankle injuries.

Football

NFL -- Suspended Green Bay Packers DB LeRoy Butler for one game for hitting Detroit Lions QB Andre Ware in the head during a Dec. 6 game.

Green Bay Packers -- Signed S Johnnie Jackson.

Kansas City Chiefs -- Released S Kevin Porter and OT Joe Staysniak. Signed C Mike Baab and P Paul McJulien.

New England Patriots -- Activated OL Steve Gordon from the practice squad. Signed DB John Granby to the practice squad.

New Orleans Saints -- Signed DE Michael Brandon to their practice squad.

Hockey

Philadelphia Flyers -- Agreed to terms with RW Kevin Dineen, son of coach Bill Dineen.

New Haven Nighthawks (AHL) -- Called up C Trevor Jobe from ECHL Nashville.

Springfield Indians (AHL) -- Recalled D Scott Humeniuk, LW Kelly Ens and G Pat McGarry from ECHL Louisville.
