Freshman guard Gail Wilkins scored 15 points to lea American (3-1) past host UMBC, (1-3), 74-71, last night.

Trailing, 71-54, with 2:06 left, the Retrievers went on a 17-3 run, including eight by freshman forward Tonia Matter, to close to 74-71. UMBC's Nikki Tinsley missed a three-pointer at the buzzer.
