Cadden appointed to the House Appropriations Committee

First-term state delegate Joan Cadden of Brooklyn Park has been appointed to the powerful House Appropriations Committee.

Mrs. Cadden, a Democrat, had served on the Constitutional and Administrative Law Committee since she was elected two years ago. Legislative leaders dissolved that committee last month to streamline the General Assembly.

A former school board member, Mrs. Cadden now goes to the appropriations panel that sets spending priorities for everything from transportation to education.

"She's been a real contributor when it comes to education, and that [Appropriations] is where the issue is dealt with best," said Delegate Michael Busch, chairman of the county's 18-member House delegation.

Delegates Victor Sulin, a Severn Democrat, and George W. Owings, a Democrat representing southern Anne Arundel, were shifted from the administrative law panel to the Environmental Matters Committee.

Brooklyn Park store robbed Tuesday night

A Brooklyn Park convenience store was robbed Tuesday evening, county police reported.

According to the police report, a man walked into the Farm Fresh store in the first block of Hammonds Lane at 8 p.m. and tried to buy a lottery ticket. As the clerk opened the cash drawer, the man pulled back his jacket and showed the clerk a gun.

The robber grabbed money from the register and ran out of the store.
