Javier Michaux and Dwight Case made impressive debuts in Howard's season-opening 90-51 boys basketball victory over visiting Liberty yesterday.

Michaux, a 6-foot-5 junior forward who transferred from North Carolina in July, had 22 points, 16 rebounds, four steals and two assists -- in three quarters. First-year coach Kevin Broadus kept four of his five starters on the bench the entire fourth quarter.

Case, a 6-1 senior center, had 12 points, 12 rebounds and four steals -- also in three quarters.

Howard showed a lot of depth, with four players in double figures and a total of 11 players scoring.

Clint Totten, a 5-11 forward, had 12 points and eight rebounds.

Jeremy Milam, a 6-5 senior center, came off the bench for 14 points and three blocked shots. Totten and Milam are back from last year's 5-14 team.

Howard's full-court press was effective against Liberty. The hometeam took a 27-12 lead at the end of the first quarter. The press, helped by starters Mike Brown and Jamaal Tyler and Aaron Graf off the bench, created 20 turnovers during the first three quarters, seven during the first quarter. Howard had 19 steals.

After Liberty took a 2-0 lead, Michaux tied it with a dunk that swayed the backboard. Michaux scored 11 in the first quarter and 17 in the first half.

Howard's defense forced a tempo that was too quick for Liberty, which had won its opener against Francis Scott Key, 85-78. Liberty's Mike Davidson scored 29 in that win but was held to 11 last night by Michaux.

L Howard held Liberty to 27 shots in the first three quarters.

"We've got a bunch of rebounders, and we hustled and played well together. I just hope we can keep it up," Broadus said.

"Everything begins with defense, and our defense is much farther along than our offense right now."
