Brown is Howard champ

Tom Brown Jr., 24, of Baltimore took the lead from Chris Nugent a half-mile into the Howard County Striders' 16th annual Metric Marathon and went on to a 2-minute, 31-second victory Sunday in the race in Columbia.

Brown, who ran the first mile in 5:16, finished in 1 hour, 30 minutes, 28 seconds, and Perry Linn, of Alexandria, Va., was second in 1:32:59. Nugent of Langley Park was third.

The Annapolis Striders' Rose Malloy, 44, a previous winner in the HCS Metric Marathon, won the women's division in 1:45:35.
