Rothschild elected Red Cross chairman

Columbia resident Bruce I. Rothschild has been elected chairman of the board of directors of the Central Maryland Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Born in Baltimore, Mr. Rothschild lives in the Village of Oakland Mills. He is a graduate of Princeton University and Georgetown Law School.

For the past 12 years Mr. Rothschild has worked for the Rouse Company in Columbia where he as been a United Way fund raiser.

His involvement with the Red Cross began 10 years ago as a member of the board of the Howard County Chapter.

"I had always thought highly of the Red Cross and thought joining the board would be a good opportunity to serve the community," said Mr. Rothschild.

Since 1988, Mr. Rothschild has served as chairman of the Howard County Red Cross, a member of the Chesapeake and Potomac Blood Services board, and vice president of the Central Maryland Chapter board.

Grants available for prevention programs

The Howard County Health Department Substance Abuse Prevention Services are offering $100 to $2,000 grants to community organizations or groups with projects directed toward the primary prevention of tobacco, alcohol and drug use.

Grant applications, which must be returned by Dec. 20, can be obtained by calling 465-6600.

Health plans merge for state employees

Chesapeake Health Plan and the George Washington University Health Plan will be offered as a single health maintenance insurance to Maryland employees for 1993.

Together, the two health plans will give state employees access to physicians in Northern Virginia, Washington and Maryland.
