Wrestlers to watch HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING PREVIEW

* Charlie Bennett, Broadneck, 119, Sr. -- Bennett is a two-time region champion and county runner-up who placed third in the state at 112. He was 31-4 last season.

* Greg Booth, Arundel, 171/189, Sr. -- Booth was 28-6 last year at 171, runner-up in the county and region and fourth in the state. With a three-year mark of 63-22, he is Arundel's most experienced.

* Jason Bryant, Old Mill, 112, Jr. -- Bryant went 24-9 and placed fourth at the states at 103 pounds. Sandwiched between two varsity newcomers, he is especially important in the lower weight classes.

* Jack Copus, Annapolis, 152, Jr. -- Copus was fourth in the county and fifth in the region last season, and compiled a 16-9 record.

* Mark Downey, Chesapeake, 112, Sr. -- Downey was fourth in the county and the region last season at 103. He had a 21-13 record.

* Al Grunder, Northeast, 160/171, Sr. -- Grunder was the county runner-up, region champion, and state semifinalist last season at 152, and compiled a 22-9 record. He is ranked fourth in the state.

* Jason Grunder, Northeast, 145/152, Jr. -- Grunder was fourth in the county and region last season at 140, and coach Al Kohlhafer expects better things this season.

* Jaron Hairston, South River, 189, Sr. -- A big, strong upper-body wrestler, Hairston placed third in the county and regionals at 171 last season while finishing with a 26-9 record. He won the Southern Tournament and finished with 16 pins, including nine in the first period.

* Doug Horton, Chesapeake, 140, Jr. -- Horton won county and region titles at 130 pounds last season, compiling a 28-5 record ++ and winning the Aberdeen Tournament. He had 15 pins, including 12 in the first period.

* Todd Hultgren, Old Mill, 152, Sr. -- Hultgren placed third in the county and region last season. He compiled a 26-6-1 record. On a young team, his experience will be vital.

* Bill Katzenberger, Northeast, 152/160, Sr. -- Katzenberger won 17 matches and placed second in the county and third in the region at 145.

* Jamie Kuch, Severna Park, 112, Soph. -- Kuch went to the states after winning 16 matches and placing third in the region last season. He's one of only three returning starters for Severna Park.

* Marty Kusick, Northeast, 103/112, Soph. -- Kusick posted a 28-1-1 record at 103 and placed third in the state meet, losing to eventual champion Jeremy Myers of North Carroll. He won the county and region championships, and is ranked fourth in the state.

* Mike Kusick, Northeast, 112/119, Soph. -- Kusick was 28-2 last season at 112. He finished as the county champion and region and state runner-up, and is ranked second in the state.

* George Mamalis, Severna Park, 119, Soph. -- Mamalis is another reason Severna Park is strongest in the lower weight classes. He won 15 matches last season and placed fourth in the region.

* Chuck McConnell, Chesapeake, hvy., Sr. -- McConnell was fourth in the region at 189 pounds last season, and battled through a shoulder injury to go 16-11 and win the Aberdeen Tournament. Ten of his 12 pins came in the first period.

* Travis Murdock, South River, 112, Sr. -- Murdock went 22-12 last season wrestling at 103. He had nine pins, including five in the first period, but his biggest win was a come-from-behind victory over Old Mill's Jason Bryant, who was county and regional runner-up and placed fourth in the states.

* Sherrard Neal, Southern, 130, Sr. -- Neal finished third in the states as a sophomore, but only managed to place third in the county and fourth in the region last season.

* Rick Oleszczuk, Old Mill, 140, Sr. -- At 135 pounds, Oleszczuk placed fourth in the county and region meets last season. He won 19 matches.

* Marc Procaccini, Old Mill, 160, Sr. -- A county, region and state champion last season, Procaccini is the best wrestler on a team gearing for a fifth-straight state Class 4A-3A state title. He had a 27-2-1 record, and is ranked third in the state.

* Kevin Seavey, Old Mill, 135, Sr. -- Seavey went 20-9 last season and placed second in the county and third in the region.

* Scott Thompson, St. Mary's, 189, Sr. -- Wrestling out of his weight class at heavyweight last week, Thompson took third at the Curley Catholic League Tournament after being a 171-pound runner-up last season. He is the Saints' best hope at winning an MSA title.
