* Pat Brennan, Hammond, 189, Sr. -- Brennan, who had trouble realizing his potential early in his Hammond career, came around in a big way for the Bears last winter. He went 26-10-1 and won a regional championship. He'll have a tough time overtaking Casella, but Brennan will score often for Hammond.

* Nate Casella, Wilde Lake, 189, Sr. -- Casella appears on the verge of winning his first state title. He is the leader of a team that could slip past Hammond and Oakland Mills and win the county tournament. Last season, he was 25-4, won county and regional titles, then finished second in the states.

* Steve Cho, Glenelg, 112, Sr. -- The county's reigning 103-pound champion, Cho was 11-8 last season and finished fourth at the regionals. On a team with inexperienced wrestlers, Cho will be counted upon heavily to keep the Gladiators respectable.

* Scott Cooper, Mount Hebron, 119, Sr. -- Wrestling at 112 pounds last season, Cooper compiled a 14-5 record. He finished first in Howard County's tournament and third in Class 2A-1A, Region III. Coach Bill Hamel calls him the county's 119-pound favorite.

* Juri Freeman, Oakland Mills, 103, Jr. -- Throw out Freeman's deceptive 14-17 record last season. He weighed 90 pounds then, and by the end of the season, Freeman was one of the smarter, more tenacious wrestlers in the county. He finished fourth at the county tournament.

* Mac Goudy, Hammond, 171, Sr. -- Goudy was perhaps Hammond's most unheralded wrestler last season, when he was 27-8-1 and won the 160-pound title at the county tournament. He'll be one of the Golden Bears' leaders, and coach Bill Smith said Goudy "has what it takes to win a state title."

* Mike Green, Wilde Lake, 171, Jr. -- One of the great athletes and fast-learning wrestlers on the team, Green was 20-4 last season, won county and regional titles, then finished third in the states. His performance will dictate largely how far the Wildecats go.

* Adam Seidman, Oakland Mills, 140/145, Sr. -- One of the great high school careers in county history, Seidman is preparing to set the record for most victories in school history. A three-time county champion and returning regional champion last season, when he was 25-4, Seidman is 20-1 against the county in his career.

* Jason Sturm, Atholton, 119/125, Sr. -- Sturm, a non-pinner, was 20-11 record last season, mostly at 119 pounds. He has placed the past three seasons in the Howard County tournament at 103 and 119. Coach Ron McMillan considers him "my one dependable wrestler."

* Erin Woodward, Hammond, 140, Sr. -- Woodward was one of the keys to the Golden Bears' 13-1 season last season, and he's the heart of the team. He was 21-6-2 with nine pins last season, and finished third in the county and second in the regionals. Pound for pound, he's one of the county's strongest wrestlers.
