Name: Hazel Doegen of Glen Burnie

Accomplishments/Interests: Hazel is retired after 25 years as a nurse at North Arundel Hospital in Glen Burnie.

Shortly after retiring, the hospital asked her about volunteering as a member of the North Arundel Auxiliary.

She accepted the offer and has been instrumental in providing the free blood pressure screenings the hospital sponsors at the Harundale Mall every Wednesday morning. She also responds to calls from local businesses and schools to assist in administering blood pressure screenings. And she works at the hospital's Emergency Room desk four hours a week, taking patient information and pulling and filing patient charts.

In her spare time, she enjoys sewing and taking trips with her husband,

Organization's Comments: Jennifer Curtis, from North Arundel Hospital's public relations office, says of Mrs. Doegen: "Many participants [in the blood screening program] say that the major reason they return each week is due to Mrs. Doegen's genuine caring, rapport and personal kindness."

Volunteer's Comment: "I enjoy this so much, especially the blood pressure screening -- they're my people. If I can help them, I feel I can do something for them [and] try to direct them to help.
