Admirals go to freshmen Severn GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL PREVIEW

The Severn Admirals never have a problem fielding a basketball team, but the teams don't always consist of basketball players such as freshmen Monique Jennings and Katie Grau.

"These two are basketball players," coach Rhonda Warmsley said. "They aren't a couple of girls waiting for lacrosse season to start."

Both played for the Ledo Lightning, a Davidsonville-based Amateur Athletic Union 13-and-under team that competed in a national tournament this summer. Warmsley hopes their experience and skill will help the Admirals past the first round of the Association of Independent School B Division playoffs, where Severn's season ended last year.

"Monique is just a basketball player, to put it in a nutshell," said Warmsley, whose team was 6-6 last season. "She's a great ballhandler, and she finds the open man.

"Katie Grau is a player, and she'll start, too. Katie will be a big help."

Grau will play center or strong forward, and Jennings will play guard. Forward Meagan Pollock, the returning senior, will be joined by juniors Becky Paul (forward-guard), Melissa Morlock (center), Sarah Long (guard) and Emily Franey (forward).
