Volleyball team's gain basketball team's loss Centennial GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL PREVIEW

December 03, 1992|By Gary Lambrecht | Gary Lambrecht,Staff Writer

When last season ended, Centennial's girls basketball team appeared to be on the verge of a breakthrough.

It had finished 10-13, and 6-foot center Shannon Saltzman (9.8 points per game, 8.1 rebounds, 4.0 blocks, all team-highs) had become the inside force coach Beth Brown had envisioned.

Then, Saltzman decided to pass up basketball to concentrate on volleyball her senior year, a decision that leaves the Eagles scrambling to fill a sizable void.

"It's a big loss, but Shannon made a mature decision and I respect her for it," said Brown, Centennial's second-year coach.

"Rebounding is my biggest concern. That's where people really have to work together and pick up where Shannon left off. If we don't, we're going to have a hard time this year. We no longer have the twin towers."

That means more pressure will be put on 5-10 senior center Sheri Happel, one of four returning starters who should keep the Eagles competitive.

While the rest of the team is shorter, Centennial hopes to compensate with quickness. Look for them to run more and rely more on their transition game.

Senior guards Kelly Butler and Laura Taneyhill, both four-year players, will need to increase their scoring.

Butler (5-5) averaged 5.6 points at point guard, where she must add to her 1.5-assist average. At the shooting guard position, the 5-7 Taneyhill is a great leaper who figures to help more on the boards, but she also needs to add to her 5.3-point average.

Senior 5-6 forward Tiffany Bowers (three points, two rebounds) is bTC the player Brown is counting on to give the Eagles stability underneath with Happel.

Jeanine Lee, a 5-6 guard who was the first player off the bench last year, figures to start. Sophomores Michelle Dugan (5-11 forward) and Sheri Kujawa (5-8 forward) should give the Eagles frontcourt depth.
