Cincinnati Reds -- Agreed to terms with P John Smiley on a four-year contract. Agreed to terms with P Dwayne Henry on a one-year contract. Placed P Tom Bolton on unconditional release waivers. Named Ferguson Jenkins pitching coach at Double-A Chattanooga.

Montreal Expos -- Sent P Doug Simons outright to Triple-A Ottawa.


Golden State Warriors -- Placed Jeff Grayer, who has played in 179 consecutive regular-season games, on the injured list to make way for the return of rookie Latrell Sprewell.

Phoenix Suns -- Placed G Kevin Johnson on the injured list.

Greek Basketball League -- Banned G Steve Burtt for life for testing positive for cocaine and hashish.


Big East Conference -- Announced that Syracuse will be allowed to play in the men's conference basketball tournament despite sanctions barring them from the NCAA tournament.

Arkansas -- Named Danny Ford football coach.

Trenton State -- Announced that the NCAA would take no further action against its women's lacrosse team, which gave up its 1992 national title because an academically ineligible student played on the squad.

Southern Cal -- Mike McGee confirmed that he is resigning as athletic director to replace King Dixon in the same post at South Carolina.


San Jose Sharks -- Waived LW Petri Skriko.
