Training sessions open for church shelter volunteers

Two training sessions will be held Wednesday for people who wish to volunteer for "Winter Relief for the Homeless," the shelter for homeless men that will move among Glen Burnie area churches.

The sessions will run from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Training will be held at Glen Burnie United Methodist Church, 5 Crain Highway SE. People who cannot attend but who wish to volunteer should call Peggy Vick at 768-0477 to arrange for viewing a videotape of an earlier training session.

The shelter starts today and will continue through mid-March.

Glen Burnie man charged with drug possession

County police arrested a 55-year-old Glen Burnie man on drug charges Friday morning after they found him slumped over the steering wheel of a car parked near North Arundel Hospital and confiscated what they suspect is $1,700 worth of cocaine.

James Alfred Crawford, 55, of the 700 block of Marley Ave. was charged with driving while intoxicated and possession with intent to distribute cocaine.

Police said they found the engine still running in the 1990 Toyota 4-Runner about 8 a.m. in the 400 block of Woodlake Drive. After getting the man out of the car, they said he failed a sobriety test. From inside the man's coat, police said they found a glass jar with 16 large rocks, suspected to be crack cocaine. Officers said they also found another jar with more suspected cocaine, $1,024 in cash and drug paraphernalia.
